Adidas gets World Cup boost

Adidas has raised its profit forecasts for the second time this year after the World Cup boosted sales.  At the World Cup the German company supplied referees and officials’ kit while also supplying 12 of the 32 teams including the winners Spain.  The shirts of Argentina, Germany and Mexico are among the company’s best sellers.   For US rivals Nike the best-performing team was the Netherlands.

While some of the star players sponsored by Adidas did not peform well, others including Spain’s Iker Casillas and Uruguay’s Diego Forlan won individual awards for their performances.  The new Jabulani ball provided by Adidas also attracted plenty of attention, although much of it unfavourable.  Players claimed that it had a tendency to swerve unexpectedly.

Adidas’s football-related sales are set to exceed €1.5bn this year, well above the previous best of €1.3bn in 2008.
