It is salutary to remember that Wenger was only the third foreign manager in the Premier League, whereas today British managers are the exception rather than the rule.   He brought new methods of preparation to Arsenal.

However, Arsenal and Wenger were slow to react to the influx of money into the Premier League.  A lot of the money they did have went into the Emirates Stadium.

Now they are playing catch up.   Since 2013 they have spent £197m on new players, a sum exceeded only by the two Manchester clubs.
