Brokers make World Cup predictions

Financial analysts have been busy making predictions about the World Cup.  The ‘stochastic [probablistic] model’ of Goldman Sachs predicts a victory for Brazil, but most brokers are more interested in which companies might do well out of the tournament.

Financial analysts have been busy making predictions about the World Cup.  The ‘stochastic [probablistic] model’ of Goldman Sachs predicts a victory for Brazil, but most brokers are more interested in which companies might do well out of the tournament.

Top of the broker lists is broadcaster ITV, while popular picks include pub operators such as Marston’s, Greene King and JD Wetherspoon.   However, their takings are susceptible to how long England stays in the competition with fans who might otherwise drink at home preferring the atmosphere of a communal setting for England games.

Bookmakers such as Ladbrokes, William Hill and Paddy Power are a dodgier bet as they could lose out big time if results go against them.   Domino’s Pizza and the newly listed Just Eat could benefit from the generally late kick off times.

Outside picks include Sports Direct and JD Sports which sell replica shirts, but England may not stay in the tournament long enough to generate really substantial sales.
