Cellino may close Thorp Arch

Leeds owner Massimo Cellino is considering a long-term closure of the club’s training ground at Thorp Arch near Wetherby as he says it is too expensive.   The facility is temporarily closed in a bid to save money.  Cellino is approaching the owner to see if the rent can be cut.

In the film The Damned United, Leeds players are seen training on a pitch adjacent to Elland Road. Where they would train if Thorp Arch was closed is unclear.   Most ambitious clubs see a state of the art training facility as essential, particularly for developing young players, but Cellino has also cast doubt on the value of the Academy.

Cellino claims that he is close to selling his Italian club Cagliari for a reported £40m so that he can concentrate on Leeds.
