Fan power defeats sponsorship deal

In what must be one of the first decisions of its kind, Bolton Wanderers have quickly dropped a sponsorship deal with a pay day loan company after protests from fans and local politicians. They had satisfied themselves that QuickQuid were regulated and responsible, but said they did not want to damage relationships with the local community for commercial reasons.

A petition against the Championship club’s two-year sponsorship deal received almost 5,000 signatures. The club will now be sponsored by Bolton-based sustainable energy company FibrLec. The team’s kit will carry its logo along with the Bolton University logo, as the firm grew from the university.

It is believed that the deal with QuickQuid was worth £500,000 over two years, but the value of the replacement deal is not known.
