"If you want some accessible but informative insight into football then I suggest you couldn't do better than the Political Economy of Football website, which is not only intelligible but comes with the added bonus of being written by Addicks fan Wyn Grant."

Fans think clubs focus too much on global brand

Two-thirds of football fans think that clubs focus too much on the global brand at the expense of the local fan base, according to a survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Federation.   Only one third of supporters thinks that the club cares about them.

Somewhat surprisingly, the survey found that 51 per cent of fans lived within 15 miles of the ground. However, although this was a survey with a large N, respondents were self-selected, so the results may not be too reliable,  This is confirmed by the fact that 69 per cent of fans started supporting their club because it was their local team.

Just why the global reach of Premier League football is so lucrative, but also expensive to watch, is evident in this article about Singapore.
