‘I am good virus,’ says Cellino

Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino has asserted that he is a good virus in an interview with ITV News Calendar in Yorkshire.   He compared the club to a jet plane with too many people and too much luggage on board.  ‘If they want to throw me out, like a virus, they will have to try harder,’ he said.

Among the baggage being thrown out are 40 permanent staff Cellino is trying to get rid of at Elland Road, as well as some 400 casual workers.    They are said to be in a state of shock and anger.  Club secretary Alison Royston has been suspended for reasons that are unclear pending an internal investigation.

It is no secret that Cellino would like to get rid of manager Brian McDermott, but it would cost at least £1.6m to pay him off, given that he has two years left on his contract.   Cellino claims that McDermott has not been contactable, but he has been visiting his sick mother.

The Football League is investigating Cellino’s temporary closure of the Thorp Arch training ground.  It looks as if Leeds is in for a new period of turmoil.   One of his initiatives is to retire the No.17 shirt which he thinks is unlucky.
