David Moyes has been told there are no limits on what he can spend on any individual transfer at Manchester United.   New chief executive Ed Woodward told the Sunday Times, ‘We haven’t got money burning a hole in our pocket but we have a strategy on player purchases and if David wants to go after a stellar player, he can do that.’

Asked why United’s highest transfer lags significantly behind the biggest sums paid for players by Chelsea and Manchester City, as well as Champions League rivals including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain and Bayern Munich, Woodward said: ‘It”s coincidence.  We can push the boat out as much as any club.  It’s all down to the fact, pure and simple, that Alex Ferguson wanted to buy the players he bought.’

Could United pay £60m, £70m or even more for a player?   ‘Yes, absolutely,’ replied Woodward who is pledging an more open era at United in terms of communicating with the media and supporters.
