"If you want some accessible but informative insight into football then I suggest you couldn't do better than the Political Economy of Football website, which is not only intelligible but comes with the added bonus of being written by Addicks fan Wyn Grant."

More financial troubles at Glentoran

Glentoran are regarded as one of Northern Ireland's leading football clubs, but once again they have hit financial problems.   The players have not been paid their wages for October.

Last year the club received £450,000 from a mystery donor to keep them afloat and more recently they have received an emergency loan from the Irish FA.

In the longer term the club hope to move to Belfast's tourist zone in the Titanic Quarter.   Whether this would do anything to improve finances is an open question, although a group of investors is supposed to be associated with the move.

An underlying problem is that many football fans in Northern Ireland are attracted by more glamorous clubs across the water and follow or even supporter clubs like Celtic, Rangers, Liverpool and Manchester United.
