All too often, the whiff of corruption or at least of preferential treatment has surrounded Fifa.  No modern organisation based on democratic procedures should be so dominated by one man.  Of course, there has been speculation that blowing the whistle will undermine England’s bid.


Sports governance in general falls below standards in other walks of life.  Because of the magnetism of sport, it is able to get away with practices that would not be tolerated elsewhere.
