The club was founded in 1876 and plays at Vale Park in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent (capacity 20,000). In February 2006, the pop star Robbie Williams, a long-time supporter, bought £240,000 worth of shares in the club. In December 2006 the club secured £2.2m for new projects at its ground by the government agency 'North Staffordshire Regeneration Zone'.
