Rangers win tax case

Rangers have won their tax case  at a tax tribunal over their payments to players through Employee Benefit Trusts which Revenue & Customs argued were illegal.   The tribunal ruled that they should be treated as loans for tax purposes, although they reached this decision by a two to one majority verdict. Revenue & Customs has said that it is disappointed by the decision and may appeal.

On one level the decision does not affect the current club as it refers to the ‘oldco’ Rangers now in liquidation.   However, the Scottish Premier League could stlll find the payments in breach of its rules and strip Rangers of titles, although there is now pressure for the SPL proceedings to be dropped.

This article suggests that the case started the slide of Rangers towards the precipice, although it is difficult to agree with the view expressed that there was nothing wrong at Rangers.
