"If you want some accessible but informative insight into football then I suggest you couldn't do better than the Political Economy of Football website, which is not only intelligible but comes with the added bonus of being written by Addicks fan Wyn Grant."

Rival bids for Sunderland

A consortium of wealthy supporters is ready to rival a German bid for Sunderland.    It is believed that there is a big gap between owner Ellis Short's valuation of the club and its crippling debt and what the German consortium is prepared to offer.

Leo Pearlman, Gabe Turner and his brother Ben are the film executives attempting to buy a controlling interest in the club which Ellis Short values at £100m.    Pearlman and the Turners are the co-owners of the production company Fulwell 73 which takes its name from one of the ends at Sunderland's former Roker Park home.  73 refers to the club's 1973 FA Cup victory.
