"If you want some accessible but informative insight into football then I suggest you couldn't do better than the Political Economy of Football website, which is not only intelligible but comes with the added bonus of being written by Addicks fan Wyn Grant."

United now the best paid team in the world

Manchester United are now the best paid football team in the world, having overtaken Barcelona.   Average basic first team pay at United is £110,962 a week.   This is forty times as much as the club was paying in the first season of Premier League football in 1992-3.

The average weekly pay for Premier League players is £48,766 a week, 32 times as much as in 1992-3. This is almost twice as much as La Liga where the average figure is £24,786 a week.

However, only three of the top twelve best paid teams are from football: Barcelona, Manchester United and Manchester City.  The best paid team is a NBA outfit from Cleveland at over £125,000 a week.
