United seal new kit deal

Whatever problems they have been having on the pitch, and the tide may be turning there, Manchester United continue to enjoy great success of it.   After admittedly protracted negotiations, they are about to sign a new kit deal with Nike worth £600m over ten years which will treble the value of their current deal.   This will give David Moyes the financial muscle he needs in the summer transfer window.

That is almost double the current best kit manufacturing deal, which sees Real Madrid earn £31million from their arrangement with adidas.   United currently have a deal with Nike worth £23.5million-a-season – less than Real, Arsenal, Barcelona and Liverpool.

But that 13-year agreement expires next year and, while the figures being demanded by the Old Trafford club were exceptional, there was no shortage of interest. Puma, Warrior and adidas all emerged to challenge Nike, but the Amercan giants were determined that United would not escape from their portfolio.

With a £35million-a-year short sponoship deal due to start with Chevrolet next season , it is clear that United can ride out the financial problems caused by a failure to finish in the top four this season.
